University Service

    Committee Work

    • Member of the Constitutional Review Committee, since September 2000.
    • Member of the Judicial Committee, since September 2000.
    • Member of Technology Advisory Committee, since September 1997. Has served as minutes recorder since 1999.
    • Appointed Parliamentarian of Faculty Association in August 2000.
    • Served on the Special Review Committee, which had to process a faculty dismissal case.
  • Was part of the pilot program testing the Silicon Chalk package for classroom management of laptops.
  • Wrote a series of programs to assist in the evaluation of new laptops in the Spring of 2003. (See the Research Page.)
  • Revised the Computer Science curriculum. Several courses were dropped and new ones introduced. Moreover a loophole that allows CIS and Math students to obtain the minor with very little work was closed. These modernize the minor.
  • Attended Great Plains Software's Stampede to Fargo on September 14, 2000.
  • Spoke at the Barnes County Career Fair on the VCSU campus in 1999.
  • Attended Great Plains Software's Stampede to Fargo, September 1999.
  • Spoke at the Barnes County Career Fair on the VCSU campus in 1998.
  • Attended Great Plains Software's Stampede to Fargo on September 16, 1997. On the afternoon of the 17th was Career Directions, which included a career fair.
  • Spoke at the Barnes County Career Fair on the VCSU campus in 1997.
  • Presented a workshop on World Wide Web page development to faculty in Fall of 1996.
  • Attended Great Plains Software's Stampede to Fargo on September 17 and 18 of 1996.
  • Made presentations to promote VCSU at two career fairs during the fall semester of 1995. The first was the Barnes County Career Fair which was on the VCSU campus and the second was the Griggs County Career Fair in Cooperstown.

Divisional Service

  • Served on the divisional faculty search committee which hired David Olsen for a Mathematics position in Spring of 2002.
  • Served on the divisional faculty search committee which hired Joseph Alummoottil for a Mathematics position in Spring of 2001.
  • Served on the divisional faculty search committee which hired Verghese Nallengara for a Mathematics position in Spring of 2000.
  • Served on the divisional committee to establish policy on the election and term of a divisional chair in Spring of 1999.
  • Served on the divisional faculty search committee which hired Lance Nielsen for a Mathematics position in the Spring of 1999.
  • Served on the divisional faculty search committee which hired Anjan Biswas for a Mathematics position.
  • Was helpful in the implementation of the laptop initiative in the informal help and training of other faculty members, especially in the Math, Science and Technology division.

Departmental Service

  • Elected as the divisional representative to Faculty Senate.
  • Renumbered the lower Computer Science classes to conform to NDUS common course numbering.
  • Served on the departmental committee to establish policy on the election and term of a departmental chair in Spring of 1999.
  • Changed the curriculum by replacing the FORTRAN class with a Comparative Programming Language class.
  • Participated in Common Course Numbering meeting in 1997.
  • Established the first departmental World Wide Web server at VCSU, which contains departmental information and home pages for each of the faculty members in the Mathematics department. I have also posted class information to this server, so that any student can get information concerning class, even before its announced in class. This web site was functional before the VCSU web server was functional and moved onto that server when it came up. It is still a full function web site.
  • Revised the Computer Science curriculum to make it more current. This included revisions of CS 221, CS 222, among others and the introduction of a new class CS 170.

Miscellaneous Service

Community Service

  • Started delivering the meals on wheels in Valley City area in 1996. This habit continues to date.
  • Assisted Lois Cahoon of the Valley City Police Department in converting a database file from Q&A format to that of Microsoft Access.
