PRINTMAKING II Is a course that explores
advanced
printmaking processes in intaglio, woodcut, and monotype. Development
as
a
printmaker / artist is emphasized. Contemporary
and historical references will be explored through the use of slides,
text
and actual prints.
II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Printmaking II is an advanced course on
the
printmaking processes. It includes intaglio, relief,
planographic
techniques, and the development of full
color printmaking.
III. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
A. to gain an understanding of the
process used in producing the painted monotype;
B. to gain an understanding the
advanced
processes of the woodcut;
C. to gain an understanding the
advanced
processes of intaglio, including color and mezzotint;
D. to gain an understanding the basic
processes of screen printing;
E. to produce a large edition of
either intaglio, woodcut, or screen prints;
F. to develop self-assessment tools;
G. to develop the process of
analyzing,
discussing, and critiquing their own work and the work of other
printmakers;
H. to develop an awareness of the
historical and contemporary development in printmaking;
I. to gain an understanding
of the proper advanced print lab procedures: and
J. to begin the process of presenting
her/his own intents in oral and written artist’s statement.
IV. COURSE PHILOSOPHY AND POLICIES:
A. ATTENDANCE: Studio art
classes
are considered lab classes. Attendance is expected. Any
absence
disrupts the flow of the learning
process.
B. WORK OUTSIDE OF CLASS: You should expect to spend four to six hours per week outside of class time working on drawing projects.
C. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND TWO PRESENTATIONS BY ARTISTS.

A. PROJECTS:

B. FINAL PRESENTATION: Each
student
will give a formal 10-20 minute, in class presentation of their final
print
portfolio.

Project objectives:

an understanding of one's own work
PORTFOLIO: A portfolio of all final projects is due at the end of the
term.
Projects will include:
mezzotint, 6" x 4", edition of 5 -10 and all proofs
large plate, 18" x 12", edition of 5 and all proofs
4 or 5 plate color print, 9" x 6" or 6" x 4", edition of 5 and all
proofs
woodcut, 2 - 4 color , edition of 5 and all proofs
painterly monotype, 18" x 15", series of three
screen print, proof of techniques

D. SKETCHBOOK: To advance
self-development
and self-assessment a printmaking diary / journal will be kept and will
include: image plans /
designs
/ sketches, journal of processes, development of the artist statement
as
it relates to printmaking. You will be expected to keep a
sketchbook
/ printmaking journal. Your printmaking journal will also be used
for assigned reading responses.
E. CRITIQUES: The critique will be
used not only as an avenue for constructive criticism by both the
artist
and the group but also as a forum for
problem
solving, exploration, expansion of ideas, and the development of art
language
and critical theory. The final critique will be held on
Thursday, May 13, 2004, at 10:00 AM.

Your grasp of the objectives as they are presented in each project.

Growth in your sensitivity to various media used in class.
3.
The sensitivity with which you combine that understanding with your
learned
abilities.

Your approach to this class (which includes attendance).

B. SELF-ASSESSMENT: As artists we
are our own best (and sometimes worst) critics. As student artists we
need
to develop our
self-assessment
skills in tandem with our creative skills. Self-assessment will be used
to develop the image of the "self", critical thought,
art
language, and verbal and written skills.
