ART 322 PRINTMAKING III MCCAR 360  SPRING 2004

    PRINTMAKING III is an advanced studio class where emphasis is placed on individual development of self expression and style. This course
    was developed to give you the freedom and flexibility to experience in-depth research in the creative and technical aspects of printmaking. You
    will explore the "self" and/or "your style" and how it relates to historical and contemporary artistic trends and social issues.

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Printmaking III is a course in advanced research into a chosen printmaking area.

III. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
      A. to develop a personal image and direction;
      B. to develop a greater aesthetic and conceptual sensitivity of contemporary printmaking;
      C. to develop the techniques necessary to actualize their desired image;
      D. to develop the techniques necessary to operate in the print lab unassisted;
      E. to develop the ability to photograph and present work;
      F. to develop the ability to express her/his intents in an oral and written artist’s statement;
     G. to develop greater skill in self-evaluation;
     H. to become capable of working independently on a professional level; and
      I.  to produced a portfolio of prints.

IV. COURSE PHILOSOPHY AND POLICIES:
     A. ATTENDANCE: This is an advanced course and you are considered an advanced student printmaker. With this recognition comes certain
          advantages and higher levels of responsibility. You are invited but not required to attend printmaking class. If you choose not to attend class
          then you are required to make a weekly critique appointment with me. This appointment will occur either during regular printmaking session or
          during my regular office hours. Failing to do so will be considered an absence.

V. LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
     A.  PROJECTS: 200 hours of printmaking research is expected. Choice of printmaking media and image and/or direction is to be determined by
           you after critical discussion. You will be expected to sign a work/grade contract.

     B.  A SKETCHBOOK will be used as a "printmaking process diary". The diary will include preliminary sketches, layout drawings, and research
           notes that map out the process of each printmaking OR otherwise log your printmaking progress.

     C.  FINAL PROJECT PRESENTATION: You will present your work and yourself, as an artist to the printmaking class at the end of the
           semester. Your presentation will include an artist’s statement as it relates to your work from this course. Your presentation will be
           documented.

           *Present a spoken analysis of one's own work as it relates to this course

     D. COMMUNICATION - To convey thoughts and ideas effectively
          Written - Level 4
          *Moves beyond surface responses and evidences critical thinking skills
          *Understands and appropriately applies visual art based concepts in written form
          *Synthesizes visual thoughts and ideas in written form

           Spoken - Level 4
           * Understands and communicates concepts of one's own work
           * Verbally critiques one's own visual concepts

     E.  CRITIQUES: Critiques will be set as your progress requires critical evaluation. The critique will be used not only as an avenue for
           constructive criticism but also as forum for problem solving, exploration and expansion of ideas, and the development of art language and
           critical theory. The final critique will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 10:00 AM.

VI. EVALUATIUON / ASSESSMENT
     A. EVALUATION: Your evaluation (grade) will be determined by the following criteria
          1.  Your grasp of the objectives as defined by the contract.
          2.  Growth in your sensitivity to the projects you forth in the contract.
          3.  The extent you fulfill your contract.
          4.  Self-assessment.

     VCSU ART DEPARTMENT GRADING CRITERIA

     B. SELF-ASSESSMENT: As artists we are our own best (and sometimes worst) critics. As student artists we need to develop our
          self-assessment skills in tandem with our creative and technical skills. Self-assessment will be used to develop the image of the "self", critical
          thought, art language, and verbal and written skills.

     C.  ARTIST STATEMENT: You are required to develop a formal artist’s statement as it relates to your work from this course.

SIGNATURE: You have received two copies of this syllabus please sign, date, and return one copy. Your signature signifies your agreement to the terms above and completes one half of your contract for this course. The second half, which will define your direction of research, is due one week from today.
