    PAINTING III is an advanced studio class where emphasis is placed on individual development of self expression and style.  This course was 
    developed to give you the freedom and flexibility to experience in-depth research in the creative and technical aspects of painting.  You will 
    explore the “self” and/or “your style”  and how it relates to historical and contemporary artistic trends and social issues. 

II.  COURSE DESCRIPTION: Painting III is an advanced research into a chosen painting media and professional development of personal image. 

III. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
   A.  to develop a greater understanding of chosen painting medium;
   B.  to develop a deep aesthetic and conceptual awareness of painting;
   C.  to develop the techniques necessary to actualize their desired image;
   D.  to develop a greater personal image and/or style;
   E.  to develop a greater sense of the “self” as an artist;
   F.  to develop the ability to effectively photograph and present work;
   G.  to be able to express her/his intents in an oral and written artist’s statement;
   H.  to develop a deeper skill in self-assessment; and 
    I.  to become capable of working independently on a professional level.

IV. COURSE PHILOSOPHY AND POLICIES:
   A. ATTENDANCE:  This is an advanced course and you are considered an advanced student painter.  With this recognition comes certain 
       advantages and higher levels of responsibility.  You are invited but not required to attend painting class.  If you choose not to attend class then
       you are required to make a weekly critique appointment with me.  This appointment will occur either during regular painting session or during
       my regular office hours.  Failing to do so will be considered an absence. 

  B. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:  The Academic Integrity Policy of the Art Department is stated in the Student Handbook .  It is expected that all 
       students in the Art Department will concur with this policy.  Any student who violates this policy in ART 342 will be faced with sanction 1. 

V.  LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
  A. PROJECTS:  200 hours of painting research is expected.  Choice of painting media and image and/or direction is to be determined by you after
       critical discussion.  You will be expected to sign a work/grade contract.

  B. A SKETCHBOOK will be used as a “painting process diary”.  The diary will include preliminary sketches, layout drawings, and research notes
      that map out the process of each painting OR otherwise log your painting progress. 

  C.  JOURNAL / READINGS:  You will begin a semester long research project the first week of class by seeking out artists you think have
        influenced you and/or your artmaking.  You will present your findings to the class for discussion.  The intention of the project is broaden your
        knowledge of other artists while develop an understanding of your own artmaking.  Show us pictures and bring us books, magazines and/or web
        pages.  

  D. FINAL PRESENTATION: You will present your work and yourself, as an artist to the painting class at the end of the semester.  Your 
       presentation will include an artist’s statement as it relates to your work from this course.  Your presentation will be documented.

      Final Presentation Objectives:
      *Demonstrate the ability to communicate the concepts of your art work in spoken form.
      *Demonstrate the ability to present yourself in a professional manner.
      *Documents presentation properly.

  E. SPOKEN COMMUNICATION - Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively thoughts, ideas, data, information, and messages in 
       spoken form. (Level 4)
      *Understands and orally communicates concepts specific to art making (painting).
      *Assembles a visual art specific presentation.
      *Verbally argues visual art strategies and beliefs.
      *Verbally interprets and critiques one's own concepts.

   F.  CRITIQUES:  Critiques will be set as your progress requires critical evaluation.  The critique  will be used not only as an avenue  for 
        constructive criticism but also as forum for problem solving, exploration and expansion of ideas, and the development of art language and 
        critical theory.   The final critique will be held on Thursday,  December 19, 2002 at 10:00 AM.

  G.  ARTIST STATEMENT:  You are required to develop a formal artist’s statement as it relates to your work from this course.

VI.  EVALUATION / ASSESSMENT:
  A. EVALUATION:  Your evaluation (grade) will be determined by the following criteria:
       1.  Your grasp of the objectives as defined by the contract.
       2.  Growth in your sensitivity to the projects you forth in the contract.
       3.  The extent you fulfill your contract.
       4.  Self-assessment.

       Final projects  50%  (300 points)
       Class participation 25%  (150 points)
       Sketchbooks  25%  (150 points)
                (Self assessment will be considered in all areas.)

  B. SELF-ASSESSMENT:  As artists we are our own best (and sometimes worst) critics.  As student artists we need to develop our 
      self-assessment skills in tandem with our creative and technical skills.  Self-assessment will be used to develop the image of the “self”, critical 
      thought, art language, and verbal and written skills.

Your signature signifies your agreement to the terms above and completes one half of your contract for this course.  The second half, which will define your direction of research, is due one week from today.
