DRAWING: is the act of making marks upon
a
surface. Drawing 331 is a continuation of ART 231 with emphasis
on
the fundamentals of
drawing, color, and composition. You
will
continue to develop your perceptual skills while using advanced black
and
white media and various
color media.
II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: An advanced drawing course with the
emphasis on the development of sophisticated drawing skills.
Included is an
introduction to color.
III. LEARNER OUTCOMES:
A. MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
1. to have a greater
understanding of both perceptual and conceptual drawing skills;
2. to have a full understanding
of
composition;
3. to have a full command of
single
drawing mediums, including, pencil, charcoal, ink, and conte;
4. to have a basic
understanding of
color mediums, including colored pencil, oil pastel; and soft pastel;
5. to have experience in
drawing the
figure;
6. to have a greater
understanding of the expressiveness of drawing;
7. to have a greater awareness
of
the historical and contemporary development of drawing;
8. to have developed the
process of
analyzing, discussing, and critiquing their own work and the work of
other
student artists;
9. to have a developed sense of
assessment
tools;
10. to begun the process of
presenting
her/his own intents in oral and written artist's statement;
11. to understand proper advanced
drawing
studio operations; and
12. to develop the technique for
presentation
of the drawing.
IV. Course Philosophy and Policies:
A. ATTENDANCE: Studio art classes are
considered
lab classes. Attendance is expected. Any absence disrupts
the
flow of the learning
process.
B. WORK OUTSIDE THIS CLASS: You should
expect
to spend at least four to six hours per week outside class time working
on
drawing
assignments.
Please bring all outside drawings to class each Monday morning for
critique.
V. Learning Activities:
A. Abilities/Portfolio Project
PORTFOLIO: A portfolio of all final projects (completed) is due
at the end of the term.
A minimum of two final projects will be professionally
presented.
The final critique will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at
1:00 PM.

drawings on a chosen theme

C. SKETCHBOOKS: Your sketchbook is
an
extremely important element in this drawing course. You will be
expected
to spend at least two
hours per
week,
outside of class, working in your sketchbook. 25% of your
evaluation will be derived from your sketchbook and other outside
class
assignments.
D. JOURNALS AND READNINGS: You
will begin
a semester long research project the first week of class by seeking out
artists
you think
have
influenced you and/or your artmaking. You will present their
findings to the class
for discussion. The intention of the project is broaden
your
knowledge of
other artists while develop an understanding of your own
artmaking. Show us pictures and bring us books, magazines
and/or web
pages.
E. CRITIQUES: The critique will be
used
not only as an avenue for constructive criticism by both the artist and
the
group but also as a forum for
problem
solving, exploration and expansion of ideas, and development of art
language and critical
theory.
F. FINAL PROJECTS: There will be
deadlines for each class project and assignment. Those deadlines
will occur approximately
every two
weeks.

VI. EVALUATION: Your final evaluation (grade) will be
determined
on the following criteria:
A. Your grasp of the
objectives
as they are presented in each project.
B. Growth in your
sensitivity to various media used in class.
C. The sensitivity with
which
you combine that understanding with your learned abilities.
D. Your approach to this
class
(which includes attendance).
E. Self assessment.

assessment skills in tandem with our creative skills. Self
assessment will be used
