I began my career at VCSU in 1999 as an instructor in the Communication Arts Department, leading to the department chair from 2010-2014, when I assumed this position. I I earned all three of my degrees from North Dakota State University. My undergrad degree is in English Education. My master's degree is in organizational communication and public relations. My doctoral degree is communication.
I am active in my discipline at the state, and national levels. I am a member of the Communication, Speech, and Theater Association of North Dakota, where in the past I was their journal editor, and went through the leadership rotation of 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President, and Past President. I am also a member of the Central States Communication Association and went the the leadership rotation for the Instruction Resources Interest Group. Finally, I have been very active in the National Communication Association, where I am currently on the Executive Committee (made up of the 2nd and 1st VP, President, Past President, and chairs of the five councils). After participating in the Teaching and Learning Committee (Formerly Educational Policy Committee) for four years, I am now the Chair of that committee. In the past, I went through the leadership rotation of the Human Communication and Technology Division, the Communication and the Future Division, and the Cushman Award. Additionally, I have been on and off the Legislative council several times.
I have works published in journals such as Argumentation and Advocacy, Communication Quarterly, Qualitative Research Reports in Communication, Journal of Communication Pedagogy, and the Journal of the Communication, Speech, and Theatre Association. I have also published entries, chapters, and activities in several books.
I am married, live in Fargo and commute, and have five cats (yes, five). My kid are all grown up and in jobs and lives of their own. I enjoy flower gardening, crafts, and spending time at our lake place on Big Cormorant Lake.
