Welcome to my home page! I work with Dr. Joan Aus, teaching some of the online courses for the English Language Learner teacher training program. The rest of my time is spent at the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA) at George Washington University in Washington, DC. NCELA provides services for teachers and administrators who work with English Language Learners (ELLs) from pre-school children to adults.
My home state is North Dakota and I am enjoying maintaining my ties with the state by serving educators in North Dakota, along with my work serving teachers in the nation! I have worked in a number of school districts in North Dakota, including Bismarck Public Schools, Fort Yates Public Schools, Solen/Cannon Ball Public Schools and Thompson Public Schools. I have also served school districts working with the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction. In addition my work with multicultural students in North Dakota, I got hands on experience being a minority in another country while teaching English as a foreign language in Turkey.
I received my PhD in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Dakota in 2008 and my Masters in Reading Education from the University of North Dakota in 1994. My areas of interest include educational programs that support students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds. My doctoral dissertation involved an exploration of teachers' perceptions of the assessment of English Language Learners.
